Job Vacancy: Apple Picker Needed in Canada

Fruit pickers, often referred to as harvesters, are an important part of the agriculture industry because fruit is delicate and requires gentle harvesting techniques. Mechanized picking machines can damage or destroy fruit during the picking process. Approximately 75 percent of U.S. vegetables are machine harvested, but less than half of fruit cops use mechanized labor, according to Rural Migration News. Fruit pickers must be detail-oriented, fast and reliable so they can remove fruit without loss. Orchard managers have their own procedures for harvesting fruit, so pickers must learn procedures and tips to satisfy their boss’s expectations.

• Sign up for fruit picks in advance of the picking date by communicating with the program coordinator ­
• Meet the coordinator at the pick location ­
• Pick a variety of different fruits, with care not to damage the plants or bruise the fruit. At times this may involve climbing a ladder to reach fruit ­
• Ensure that the fruit you pick has been weighed and recorded

• Be punctual and attend all fruit picking sessions you sign up for
• ­ Be respectful of the tree owner’s property
• ­ Be comfortable working outside ­
• If you have a ladder, bucket or picking bag please bring them to the pick

• There will be opportunities to pick fruit two days a week from late June through October Picks will take place every Saturday and one weekday throughout the season ­
• We encourage pickers to commit to multiple picks through the season ­
• The amount of time for each pick will vary based on the type, and number of fruit available The time commitment will generally range from 1­3 hours
